Geoelectric fields are generated in the upper crust of the Earth due to magnetic activity. Geoelectric fields are a hazard to our infrastructure and can cause damage to powerlines, pipelines and more. For more details on geoelectric fields, see the Research section.
An example geoelectric fields nowcast mapped across Ireland is shown above. This model uses magnetometer data as its input, performs a Spherical Elementary Current System interpolation to estimate magnetic fields across the entire island and uses magnetotelluric transfer functions (MT-TF) to convert from magnetic fields to electric fields.
